Meet Pinnawala through its elephants, history and daily rhythm
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage stands near Rambukkana in Sri Lanka’s Kegalle District. The government-run centre opened in 1975 to care for orphaned young elephants and later developed veterinary, breeding and public education work. Visitors observe a resident herd in managed care rather than elephants living freely in the wild. A thoughtful visit leaves time to understand that distinction, watch social behaviour from the public areas and follow the scheduled movement towards the Ma Oya River without crowding the animals.
