A fortified port where European design met South Asian life
Galle Fort occupies a peninsula beside the Bay of Galle on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. The Portuguese established a fort here in the 16th century, and the Dutch rebuilt and greatly expanded its defences after taking Galle in 1640. The British assumed control in 1796 while retaining much of the earlier street plan and fortifications. Today the ramparts enclose an active neighbourhood of homes, places of worship, museums, cafés and public buildings. Recognised as part of the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications, it preserves a distinctive meeting of European urban design and South Asian building traditions.
